Caries Treatment

Factors contributing to the development of tooth decay:

  • High consumption of carbohydrate-rich foods – sugars from food contribute to the attachment of specific bacteria to the tooth surface, providing them with a nutrient substrate.
  • Cariogenic bacteria in dental plaque.
  • Quantity and viscosity of saliva – the less saliva, the worse it is for the teeth. Saliva helps flush away plaque and reduces the pH in the mouth.
  • Lack of fluoride – even a small concentration of fluoride in toothpaste helps strengthen enamel.
  • Inadequate oral hygiene.
  • Anatomy of teeth and their position in the dentition – natural pits and fissures in the teeth (as well as tight tooth alignment) make plaque removal challenging.
  • Decreased immunity (both general and local).
  • Genetics – tooth decay itself is not inherited, but predisposing factors may be hereditary.

Diagnosis of tooth decay

The most important thing is to detect cavities early. For this purpose, a dentist can use the following methods:

  1. Visual examination and probing: This is the simplest and most accessible method. Using a probe – a sharp instrument that dentists use to explore suspicious pits in the teeth – only about 30% of tooth decay can be detected.
  2. Radiography: On X-rays, an attentive dentist can detect hidden cavities, decay under a filling, or between teeth – where the damage is not visible to the naked eye. Bite-wing (interproximal) X-rays are particularly informative.
  3. Transillumination: This technique involves illuminating the tooth crown with a bright light source. Carious lesions create a characteristic shadow in the light and are easily distinguishable. A conventional dental lamp is used for this purpose.

Treatment of cavities and fillings in Prague

  • First, it is necessary to clean the tooth from plaque using special brushes and paste to reduce the number of microorganisms in the working area.
  • The dentist will ensure your comfort during the treatment and administer anesthesia for pain relief.
  • The next step is the isolation of the working field. The dentist needs to secure optimal working conditions.
  • Then, the dentist will prepare the tooth and remove all irreversibly damaged tissues. The preparation must be gentle yet thorough. If you leave damaged dentin and place a filling, secondary decay will inevitably form beneath the filling, making it much more difficult to detect.
  • Afterward, the tooth’s surface is treated with an antiseptic solution, and finally, aesthetic restoration is performed.
